I-235 Construction - Iowa Department of Transportation

NOTE: All ramps are now open at I-235 and Second Avenue.

Schedule: September 2002 through Dec. 2003

Description: The reconstruction of this interchange began in September 2002. The bridges over I-235 at Second Avenue, Third Street and Fifth Avenue will be replaced and ramps to the interchange reconstructed. One additional lane will be added for both eastbound and westbound traffic over the Des Moines River Bridge.

Closures: The Fifth Avenue Bridge and the eastbound entrance ramp at 12th Street remain closed. The entrance ramp at 12th Street will remain closed indefinitely. See detour map for alternate route.

Des Moines River Bridge widening
Schedule: September 2002 to December 2003
Work began in fall 2002 on the eastbound and westbound I-235 bridge widening project. The traffic lanes through the bridge area were shifted and repainted to maintain three lanes in each direction. The bridge widening project was completed in December 2003.
